Because it strives to be more a repository than an encylopedia, OrthodoxSource accepts a much wider range of filetypes. (This is also the reason that the "Image" namespace has been renamed to "File" on this site.)

Also, unlike the Wikimedia Commons, we are much more concerned about general accessibility than the open character of a format.

This is a list of preferred (and accepted) filetypes.

  • Images: jpg/jpeg, gif, png, svg (bmp, tiff)
  • Documents: txt, rtf, doc, xls, csv, tsv,
  • Audio and Video: swf, mp3, aiff, aif, wav, mov (wma, avi, ogg)
  • Other: vCard/vcf, iCal/ics, zip

This list may need to be adjusted in the future. Please feel free to leave comments about what filetypes should be included or excluded on the Talk page.

[edit] Filetype Templates

Each of these filetypes has an associate template which can be used to present that file in the text of a page.

Available templates include:

[edit] Using a filetype template

To use a filetype template, simply insert the template in your document with a vertical pipe ("|") and then the name of the file you just uploaded (inclduing the extension), another vertical pipe and then the title of the document. For example, {{pdf|PDFDocument.pdf|Title}} yields:

pdf.gif PDF Document Info_circle.gif

Items can be clustered togethed across a row if desired (because of this, you will probably need to manually insert a line break - "<br clear=all>" - after the final template in a row):

doc.gif Title Info_circle.gif
xls.gif Title Info_circle.gif
swf.gif Title Info_circle.gif
sound.gif Title Info_circle.gif
video.gif Title Info_circle.gif
txt.gif Title Info_circle.gif
rtf.gif RTF DocumentTitle Info_circle.gif
vCard.gif vCard Info_circle.gif

The "info button" of the top right hand side points to the file's description page, where source and copyright information should be clearly indicated, and the file appropriately categorized.

[edit] File Galleries

When viewing the page for a Category that contains files, these files will appear as a "gallery." Images are autmatically thumbnailed and many other filetypes will show an appropriate icon.

A gallery may also be manually created by using <gallery> tag.

(This needs to be fixed or updated)
